DIY Natural Face & Body Scrub with Raw Honey + Sugar

My go-to weekly scrub. A natural & easy do-it-yourself for soft & radiant skin.

Last month at the Farmer’s Market, I told my friend I needed to pick up some raw honey since I was low on face wash. She looked at me puzzled. Oh right, I remembered. Not everyone concocts their own skincare products. But I for one have been making and using this recipe (and others) for the better part of a decade, and my hope is by the end of this post you’ll want to try it too!

By now most people are aware that what we put *onto* our bodies is about as important as what we put *into* them. After all, our skin absorbs (not all, but lots) of what’s applied to it. In my early twenties I started getting serious about natural skincare, but I struggled to find quality brands with clean products I really loved. So, I started making my own.

Today, there are countless companies that make great natural skincare products – and at basically all price points – but I still enjoy making some things on my own, and I recommend you try it too. First, making products like my Honey Scrub is a fun, creative and grounding activity. But it’s also a great way to customize skincare to your exact preferences, and it can help you save some money. Plus, products like this make great gifts too…and holidays are just around the corner!

This scrub is a great way to gently exfoliate and brighten your face. Its simple ingredients make it naturally antimicrobial, moisturizing, softening and anti-aging. And, the fragrance is a spa-like treat for the senses! I use it twice weekly, counting on it to look and feel my most radiant.

Try it out and let me know what you think in the Comments section below.

Raw Honey

The base of this scrub, raw honey is a hidden gem when it comes to skincare. It contains vitamins, minerals and amino acids, plus it’s antimicrobial and hydrating. Raw honey is great for sensitive and acne-prone skin, and it simply feels heavenly!

Raw Sugar

Raw sugar acts as a natural exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and give skin that smooth, even glow. Always exfoliate gently to protect your skin.

Lavender

Lavender is soothing, calming and hydrating, and it even has some antimicrobial and healing properties. All of this makes it great for both acne-prevention and youthfulness.

Tip on buying dried lavender: Dried lavender flowers are often sold as décor. However, to be sure that your lavender is clean and chemical free, I recommend buying it from an herb store or in tea form, making sure that what you’re buying is pure dried lavender flowers and not a blend. I’ve grown my own and purchased from an apothecary in Minneapolis and online at Mountain Rose Herbs.

Geranium

Geranium is one of the most popular essential oils for skincare. It’s rich in antioxidants and is often used for tightening and brightening skin.

Ingredients:

*Makes enough for one 4-oz jar

  • 1/4 Cup Raw Honey

  • 2 Tbsp Raw Sugar

  • 2 Tbsp Sweet Almond Oil

  • 1/4 Cup Walnuts

  • 1 Tsp Dried Lavender

  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

  • 4 drops Geranium Essential Oil

Directions:

Finely chop walnuts and dried lavender in a food processor. In a glass mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. You may wish to add more sugar and/or oils to achieve your desired fragrance and consistency. Store in a glass jar.

I recommend using this product one to two times per week. Moisten skin with warm water, gently massage about 1/4 teaspoon of Honey Scrub into skin for 60 seconds, rinse, and pat dry.
